My favourite place in Essen, Germany!

Some of the greatest things about my job are that 1. I get paid to go to new places and 2. I have lots of free time. 3. I get to choose my own workspace.

One of my favourite things to do, wherever I go, is to stroll around and discover new places. These can be churches, little coffeeshops, town squares, forests, anything goes. The funny thing is, there’s beauty anywhere, and today I wanna share with you guys my favourite go to place when I am in Essen, Germany: the Baldeneysee!

Look how pretty!!

I stumbled upon the lake one day just by accident, as I was looking at a map to see what a nice place would be to hang out for a bit. I saw a lake just to the south of the city and thought: this is where I need to go! And now I go there every time I can, just because it’s such a great spot.

I wonder why it was shaped like a seahorse – and why the seahorse has no ears. Do seahorses have ears?

Originally built as an reservoir, the artificial lake was created in the 1930s and it is hugely popular among the locals. The lake itself is pretty big and the view is just spectacular, from where ever you look at it. All around the lake there’s lots of activity, there’s people going round on rollerblades, typical German cyclists with helmet and basket on the back, people walking their dog, and then there’s me.

For me, it’s the perfect place to take my mind off of things, go for a walk and work in the sun. Here’s a couple of pictures I took yesterday while going for a short walk.

Walking around, taking pictures of my feet. Not weird at all.

My workspace for the day. As long as my laptop has powwaaah, I can work where ever I like. Today, it was on this bench with its magnificent view.

There’s a couple of water springs higher up the hills, the crystal clear water comes trickling down and surfaces here.

Beautiful!

Andy loves Kate, I imagine. They must have been going for a long, passionate stroll here in the woods around the lake. How romantic. Wait a second, who brings a knife to a date?!

It wouldn’t be Germany if there wasn’t a good beer garden close. Why they named it after a different region in a different county is beyond me.

Kids taking sailing lessons at the big lake. Usually very little sailing is actually being done as all they do is just shouting and crashing into each other.

So, there you go. A little insight in to what I do and what is one of my favourite go-to places when I’m in Essen and the weather is good: the Baldeneysee.  What do you think, you like it?

Stay adventurous!

  1. Hele mooie foto’s!
